Operation Cast Lead Continues In The Gaza Strip

IDF 28 December 2008 , 12:57 IST

Since Saturday morning (Dec. 27), the IDF has struck approximately 210 sites utilized by the Hamas terror organization in the Gaza Strip. These attacks, collectively known as Operation Cast Lead, are a part of operations aimed at destroying the Hamas terrorist infrastructure that has enabled continued terrorist attacks from the Gaza Strip on southern Israel. In addition to the sites attacked on Saturday, 30 Hamas sites were attacked by IDF forces last night. The targeted sites include command centers, training camps, rocket manufacturing and weapon storage facilities, and other sites crucial to the Hamas terrorist infrastructure.

Hamas has fired more than 110 rockets and mortar shells at Israel since Saturday.

The IDF Spokesperson wishes to emphasize that the IDF will continue to act against anyone who aids terrorists in any capacity, including harboring or housing terrorists, assisting with various terrorist activities, and/or forcing their children or spouses to act as human shields.

“Our intention is not to arrive at a ceasefire; it is to destroy Hamas’ motivation and intention to fight,” explained IDF Spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Avi Beninyahu. “The IDF’s goal is to create a different reality along the Gaza periphery; to create a safe and secure environment that will be long lasting.” In addition, Brig. Gen. Beninyahu expressed complete confidence that IDF forces are acting with caution and intention: “We know exactly what we need to do and what needs to be done. We will continue to act in order to decrease the terror coming from the Gaza Strip.”

The Home Front Command has deployed soldiers to assist the residents of Israeli communities surrounding the Gaza Strip. Together with the emergency response authorities, they are doing what is necessary in order to prepare the population in southern Israel for attacks in the near future. Those residing in southern Israel are requested to follow the security guidelines provided by the Home Front Command.
